Domena .tel swoją premierę miała 24 marca br., ale mimo tak krótkiego czasu jej funkcjonowania na rynku oraz mimo czarnowidztwa niektórych domenowych czarnowidzów, zarejestrowano już ponad 100 000 nazw z tą końcówką. Można oczywiście – co niektórzy czynią – próbować podważyć te wyniki, mówiąc że spora grupa domen została wykupiona przez zajmujących się ich handlem domainerów. Czas pokaże, czy ten nowy produkt stanie się funkcjonalną wizytówką XXI wieku czy podzieli los innych eksperymentów na rynku domen internetowych. Są jednak duże szanse na to, że domena .tel może odnieść sukces wśród osób, których główna aktywności sieciowa ukierunkowana jest na korzystanie z serwisów społecznościowych.
Sporą grupę wśród „społecznościaków” stanowią świeżo upieczeni internauci, dla których działalność w takich serwisach jest jednocześnie pierwszym kontaktem z Internetem (przykład: kilka milionów użytkowników Naszej Klasy). Początkowo wszystkie sieciowe działania tego typu osób przypominają trochę wizytę niedoświadczonego kierowcy na placu manewrowym: tu się coś nie uda, tutaj coś potrąci, a w najlepszym przypadku dotrze do celu, ale za pomocą własnego – często bardzo dziwacznego – sposobu. I to właśnie do internautów, których jednym z głównych motywów obecności w sieci jest chęć zaspokajania potrzeby kontaktu z innymi, postanowił dotrzeć Telnic (organizacja zarządzająca domenami .tel), oferując im swój produkt.
Tym, którzy nie mieli dotychczas styczności z telefonicznymi domenami – ze względu na fakt, że mamy w tym przypadku do czynienia z nietypowym adresem www – należą się dwa słowa wyjaśnienia. Telnic ustalił, że pod nazwami zarejestrowanymi w domenie .tel będzie funkcjonowała globalna książka telefoniczna XXI wieku. Wszystkie dane dostępne pod taką nazwą będą zapisywane w rekordach DNS, w związku z czym nie można publikować tam dowolnych treści, niemożliwe jest również dopisanie domeny do własnego serwera. Po zarejestrowaniu wybranej nazwy z końcówką .tel, otrzymujemy login i hasło do systemu, gdzie za pomocą prostego edytora można uzupełnić swoje dane teleadresowe, lokalizacyjne itp. W efekcie powstaje prosta strona-wizytówka, według jednego – określonego przez Telnic – schematu.
Wiele osób właśnie pod adresem zasad, na których działa domena .tel, kieruje swoje krytyczne uwagi, jednocześnie przewidując jej spektakularną klapę. Być może mają rację i telefoniczne adresy okażą się kolejnym niszowym produktem. Z drugiej jednak strony – tej, do której jestem bardziej przekonany – współczesna rzeczywistość wymaga bycia w stanie „ciągłej dostępności” oraz utrzymywania wielu różnorodnych kanałów komunikacyjnych, pozwalających na dotarcie do siebie. Dla wielu nie stanowi to problemu. Sieć jednak „zamieszkiwana” jest przez miliony osób, które nie posiadają wiedzy niezbędnej np. do stworzenia i uruchomienia nawet najprostszego serwisu www, a następnie do jego aktualizacji. I to właśnie dla niech telefoniczne domeny mogą stać się naprawdę atrakcyjnym produktem. 
Dobrze więc, że po wpuszczeniu tej domeny na rynek nie postawiono na niej przysłowiowego krzyżyka, zakładając „że jakoś się to na pewno sprzeda”. Do współpracy postanowiona zaprosić m.in. serwis społecznościowy MySpace, który ma włączyć się w promocję nowego rozszerzenia, przekonując swoich użytkowników, że domeny .tel mogą być prostą alternatywą dla ich profili w MySpace Mobile. A jest wśród kogo reklamować nowe domeny… Obecnie w serwisie zarejestrowanych jest ponad 130 mln osób z całego świata, wśród których ponad 20 mln każdego miesiąca korzysta z usług My Space za pomocą urządzeń mobilnych. Nie dziwią więc próby dotarcia do tak obiecujących odbiorców. W efekcie użytkownicy tej najpopularniejszej na świecie społecznościówki będą mogli rejestrować własne nazwy z końcówką .tel za około 20 dolarów. Telnic planuje również wypuszczenie na rynek darmowej aplikacji dla iPhone’ów, dzięki której możliwa ma być edycja oraz publikacja swoich danych za pomocą tego urządzenia. Docelowo będzie również możliwa rejestracja własnych nazw w domenie .tel z poziomu iPhone’a.
Wygląda to wszystko pięknie i obiecująco, w związku z czym osobiście zamierzam trzymać kciuki za powodzenie projektu „telefoniczna domena dla każdego”. A my chyba musimy zacząć wypatrywać na naszym lokalnym sieciowym horyzoncie rejestratora domen, który zdecyduje się na alians z Naszą Klasą. Ten, który dotrze z domenami .tel do naszoklasistów jako pierwszy, może dzięki nim zbudować prawdziwą kopalnię złota…
